Crucial Conversations: A Toolkit for Effective Communication at Work

This workshop is for researchers who want to improve their communications skills across the board at work.

Researchers spend significant time working alone, and at the same time, need to navigate and manage many important relationships–with students, colleagues, co-authors, supervisors, and others. We’re hard-wired to be social, and the ability to communicate with clarity and precision and cultivate positive professional relationships sets the foundation for focused and productive work, as well as personal and professional well-being.

In this workshop, participants learn techniques to communicate effectively, become more aware of others in your professional environment, and how to transform challenging relationships into meaningful, supportive ones. This workshop explores psychology-based interventions that aid in clear communication and establishing and fortifying nurturing, positive work relationships.

Learning Outcomes:

Over the course of this workshop, participants will:

  • Identify the importance of and techniques for cultivating positive relationships at work, based on insights from positive psychology and leadership studies.

  • Learn to manage conflict and soften difficult conversations.

  • Understand how to provide “brain friendly” feedback.

  • Identify when and where to establish boundaries and how to maintain them in a productive and positive way.

  • Design ways to incorporate goal-oriented processes when collaborating.
